Packers Bolster Secondary, Claim Former Rams’ DB David Long off Waivers

The Green Bay Packers have strengthened their defensive backfield by claiming cornerback David Long off waivers from the Carolina Panthers, as confirmed by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Long, a former third-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 2019, brings versatile skills and experience to the Packers’ secondary.

Long spent the initial four years of his NFL career with the Rams, during which Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry was part of the Rams coaching staff for the first two years. In the 2023 offseason, Long signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency but was waived by the team in early November. Subsequently, the Panthers claimed him off waivers, only to waive him again, leading to the Packers’ acquisition.

Standing at 5’11” and weighing 196 lbs, Long is primarily a boundary cornerback but has also demonstrated proficiency as a strong safety. Over his NFL tenure, he has recorded two interceptions and six pass breakups. Notably, Long has contributed on special teams, amassing 533 special teams snaps.

The move to claim David Long addresses the Packers’ interest in fortifying their secondary depth. Green Bay had an available roster spot since releasing running back James Robinson and wide receiver Bo Melton last year. Although Darnell Savage was activated from the injured reserve, another spot remained open.

The Packers’ current cornerback lineup includes Jaire Alexander, Carrington Valentine, Keisean Nixon, Corey Ballentine, Robert Rochell, Kyu Blu Kelly, and now David Long. The safety group comprises Darnell Savage, Rudy Ford, Jonathan Owens, Anthony Johnson Jr., and Zayne Anderson.

David Long’s performance this season has shown promise. While with the Raiders, he achieved a 68.5 defensive PFF grade in five games, including an impressive 77.1 coverage grade. However, his stint with the Panthers featured a dip in performance with an overall grade of 58.1 and a coverage grade of 66.2 in two games.

The decision to claim Long off waivers reflects General Manager Brian Gutekunst’s commitment to utilizing the 2023 season as an opportunity to enhance the roster and evaluate young talent. Additionally, it was noted by Ian Rapoport that former Packers safety Adrian Amos, who recently cleared waivers after being released by the New York Jets, did not prompt a claim from Green Bay, further signaling the team’s strategic focus on developing emerging players.
