NFL Launches “HealthTECH Challenge” to Improve Playing Surfaces; Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Focus

The NFL has initiated a “HealthTECH Challenge” to encourage innovations that can enhance the safety and consistency of playing surfaces, addressing concerns raised by players about artificial turf. The league is seeking fresh ideas to improve playing fields and is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for selected projects.

The “HealthTECH Challenge I” is open to submissions from companies, new ventures, academic institutions, design houses, and other entities specializing in engineering, advanced manufacturing, and material science. Entrants with ideas to enhance the safety and consistency of playing surfaces have the opportunity to work with an expert support team to develop their concepts.

The issue of playing surfaces gained attention after Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered an ACL tear in Week 1, sparking debates about the safety of artificial turf. Some players and the NFLPA’s new executive director have advocated for natural grass fields due to concerns about non-contact lower-body injuries on artificial turf.

Currently, 14 out of the 32 NFL teams do not play on real grass. The Dallas Cowboys play at AT&T Stadium, which features Hellas Matrix Turf. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has traditionally defended the use of high-quality artificial turf, arguing against evidence suggesting that natural grass is safer.

The “HealthTECH Challenge” reflects the league’s commitment to exploring innovations and technologies to address player safety concerns and improve playing conditions. The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to prioritize player well-being and enhance the overall NFL experience.
